↑ Spelling1) Правило удвоения согласной в односложном слове:Если две последних буквы основы односложного слова представляют собой сочетание гласная + согласная, (как в слове sit,) а окончание начинается с гласной (например, -ed, - ing, -er), то последняя согласная основы удваивается.В частности, удвоение имеет место в следующих контекстаха) в основе глагола:основа + ing:

б) в основе прилагательного:основа + er:
основа + est:
в) Если гласный звук односложного слова записывается с помощью двух букв, то удвоения не происходит:г) После согласных w, y и x удвоения не происходит:box - boxed - boxing,
play - played - playing;
2) Правило удвоения согласной в многосложном слове:Если две последних буквы основы дву- или трехсложного слова представляют собой сочетание гласная + согласная, и ударение падает на последний слог основы, а окончание начинается с гласной, то последняя согласная основы удваивается, например:а) При ударении на последнем слоге основы удвоение происходит:begin + er = beginner
deter + er = deterred
recur + er = recurred
б) При ударении не на последнем слоге основы удвоения не происходит:murmur + ed = murmured
answer + er = answered
visit + ing = visiting
3) В британском английском удвоение происходит также в основах, оканчивающимися сочетанием безударная гласная + l, а также иногда в основах, оканчивающимися сочетанием безударная гласная + p, безударная гласная + s, безударная гласная + gtravel — travelled,
dial — dialled,
model — modelling,
worship — worshipped,
